Portugal Should Apologise, Confront Past Role in Slavery, Says President

    26/04/2023

    Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on Tuesday his country should apologise and take responsibility for its role in the transatlantic slave trade, the first time a leader of the southern European nation has suggested such a national apology.

From the 15th to the 19th century, 6 million Africans were kidnapped and forcibly transported across the Atlantic by Portuguese vessels and sold into slavery, primarily to Brazil.

It's true. But honestly, at this point, this won't help do anything. Africa needs better infrastructure and education and training for trades. They need to change their borders around by ethnic groups. But they would be a messy thing to discuss

Slavery was in many ways a blessing to the African Negro because it took him out of the jungle and taught him the rudiments of civilization. At least the gentle type of slavery practiced in the American South. I'm not sure if Brazil was the same.

Portuguese living today have nothing to apologize for a thing that happened centuries back they have nothing to do with, and not even all Portuguese people from that time did.

What is next? that today's Portuguese have to get their country flooded with black Africans to "compensate" for something that happened long ago, and is not today's Portuguese fault?

Some already had the rudiments of civilization.

The portuguese had come in contact with the kingdom of Congo. Thats where most of their slaves came from. First, the congolese were selling slaves but then the portuguese conquered the congolese to monopolize on it because congolese Afonso complained that some illegal slave trades took place and they werent regulating it.

China today is doing way more for Africa than europeans did at that time. And china is doing it without slave labor, blood diamonds, or war against them.

Many black South Africans say they were best off under Apartheid. The best thing for Africans today would probably be to put the entire continent back under white rule. Decolonization was a huge mistake.

Every country was probably better under European imperialism. New Spain (Mexico) was wealthier and had better living standards than Spain itself back In the day.

Mexico today would probably be better off If It remained a common wealth and probably more Spanish too.

Every country is better off with a white European ruling class. That's not to say other races don't have a part to play but generally only Europeans have a history of successfully running countries.

Its like when a parent beats their kid every day and is emotionally abusive. Kid grows up to be a homeless crack head.

Kid might think growing up in an abusive household was better.

    Good arguements
