It's a mountainous spot on the border between Trabzon and Gumusxane. I don't know about the origin of the word.

I know that it was populated by refugee Trebizondians in 1462, including the royal court and Anna Komnenian herself before they fled to Georgia.

I also know that it was originally the homeland of the Macrones (according to historian Xenophon) who derived their tribal name from the area.
