Is max hair length really determined by genetics?

I'm asking because about 10 years ago my hair was at butt length but then suddenly broke in half. Since then I couldnt get it to grow any longer again. Is it genetics?

On my maternal side not one since at least 100 years ago as judging from pictures. Even my maternal gramps has full hair at age 86.

Genetics is a factor, but by far not the only one. Nutrition is also an important factor.
Also, the less heat-treating, colouring, harsh handling a hair strand is exposed to, the less likely it is to break.

From what I've noticed, what many people with very long hair seem to have in common is air-drying their hair as opposed to using a blow dryer, and often wearing it either braided or tying it up. That way. the hair strands are more protected and exposed to less stress.

And last but not least, I've heard a silk pillowcase is optimal for the hair.

The anagen phase of hair growth can get shorter with age, and is mostly determined by genetics.

Also, using a comb is more gentle than using a brush.
And always keep in mind to start combing from the ends, working your way towards the top.
This helps avoid tangles and knots.

Everyone with a pair of nuts will "go bald". Some people in the Basque country will go really bald early, others in say, Central America will have a widow's peak at most.

But every man will react to DHT in some way that the follicles of the temples and above the occiput will weaken.

For Stahl, follow the stuff Alenka said, but I disagree with her in the part of braiding or pulling the hair. It can cause traction alopecia if done wrong. It's one of the reasons black women love to wear wigs. They get their hair styled in very dangerous ways. The reason why people with very long hair pull it has more to do with practicality than hair health itself.

So keep it free, give more attention to your nutrition and see what happens.

Also, anagen phase length isn't connected to male pattern baldness. You can have a "short" anagen phase with a completely full head of hair, it just won't grow very long in length (to your back). For androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) there's nothing you can really do about it from a cosmetic level, you would need medical therapy to help treat it. Both of these things are primarily genetic and can't really be changed otherwise.
