    Question Seud Afrikaaners?

I know you can't trust Google Translate, but can anyone explain why this happens?

Moenie spoeg nie asseblief! > "Don't split please!"
Don't split please > "Moet asseblief nie skei nie"

    Thank you.
"Virtue grows stronger at the wound"
    "There is safety in discrimination"
"James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the 12 tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting." James 1:1

    Spoeg = spit, NOT "split".
    Split means to separate; divorce.
Hence the Afrikaans for divorce is "skei".

Thank you very much! I will have to think about this some more, because the song really does appear to say "Moenie spoeg nie asseblief"

    https://youtu.be/3NYmXeLCkFU

What do you think? It's toward the very end

Split makes sense context wise, and maybe skei sounds like spoeg next to the following word.

Cool! Just saw that your ethnicity says boer haha. You made and maintain the forum right? It must be annoying to have people on here who deny white genocide.

Is this, "don't spit", a normal greeting or was cousin Ethel from England just really really confused lol?

What I like about Afrikaans is that its grammar is more analytical than Dutch grammar or even than English grammar, yet the vocabulary and phonology is akin to 17th century Dutch or contemporary dialectical Dutch.

    Yes indeed.

I've heard all things you can think of, people have their opinions and that's usually related to how well travelled and informed they are.

Is this, "don't spit", a normal greeting or was cousin Ethel from England just really really confused lol?
Yeah she told them "don't spit please", probably referring to a nasty local habit they had, to spit on the ground. It's definitely not a normal greeting lol.

That's interesting, to hear that from a Flemish perspective Do you find it easy to read and understand Afrikaans? Do you read some publications or books in Afrikaans?

I had one lesson about Afrikaans in school (for the subject Dutch). But I can't say I have read a lot of Afrikaans. Some friends of mine who have visited Kaapstad did buy Afrikaans books though which are fun to read. Just like you can understand Dutch (I suppose), the written formal language is certainly very mutually understandable.

In the library I did once rent a book about the Afrikaans language and I noticed many proverbs are even the same as ours, sometimes with a variant more suited to the fauna or geography of Southern Africa.

Seeing threads like this makes me want to delve into it more, for sure.
