Portrait of MP quietly removed from museum over his links to slave trade
6 may 2023
Joseph Marryat, a 19th century politician in Horsham, strongly opposed the abolition of slavery throughout his career
A council has quietly removed a portrait of a former local MP from its town museum over his links to the slave trade.
The painting, which depicts 19th century politician Joseph Marryat, was identified as problematic following a review of the museum's collection by Horsham District Council in West Sussex.
The portrait was taken down from its “high-up and prominent position” because it created a “subconscious display” of authority, council documents state, and the artwork was hidden from public view by being placed in storage.
