Everything progresses at the speed of communication. Recorded music and radio broadcasts started to affect classical composers during the 1920s-30s. Of course, this is the first time anyone could hear music at their own discretion. One thing that made the early twentieth-century classical music fragment was the impact of Richard Wagner. It wasn't a Beethoven revolution from Classical to Romantic where everyone jumped on the bandwagon. It was composers reacting to Wagner by embracing him or rejecting him. One example is the prelude to Wagner's prelude to "Parsifal and then Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of the Faun". On the surface, they sound little alike, however, focusing on the rhythm and tonality, they have a lot in common.

You angrily dumped a few replies and then closed that other thread.

I will answer here. I don't call myself a musician, but I would put my understanding and knowledge of music up against yours. The fact you dismiss the "Beetles" outright shows this to be true.

If you wanted to argue the "Beetles" were overrated, I would agree with that. But looking at their amazing song catalog and the number of real musicians who cite them as influences, it is hard to dismiss them like they were Hermit's Hermits
Then why don't I enjoy their music if they are so great?

Because your music taste is very limited. You are a very shortsighted person generally speaking.

Rhythm & blues and rockabilly gave rise to the rock & roll era. The Beatles were a *band* that changed music like those *genres* changed music, and one can listen to the Blue Album after one listens to the Red Album to chart how much they evolved the aural landscape in less than a decade! I loved them since I was a toddler. Maybe I was brainwashed by the current zeitgeist as babies often are. SMH

With the influence of George Martin's arrangements and McCartney's inspired and well crafted lyrics the Beatles occasionally produced songs like the one below that were worthy of being included in the Great British Songbook, the music that most folks were exposed to until Rock took over the airwaves.

I mentioned this in your other thread. Some people pretend to like certain indie stuff because they think that it makes them look edgy. They might listen to "uncool" bands behind closed doors where none of their friends can hear them. People even pretend to despise or dislike some acts because it's the in thing to do.

I go by what moves me in some way. I don't care whether or not critics *or* fans share my tastes because I'm not 16. Well, I didn't give two cents about artsy fartsy New York leftist music critics back then, either. In fact, they usually detested bands that I liked, so thus was the beginning of my personal war on musical Bolsheviks. ;-)

I honestly think there is a disconnect between the way you hear things and they way others hear things.
Most people who don't like the Beatles at least recognize their musical accomplishments.
You just come off sounding petty and bitter that they are more successfulthan you think they should be.

He hates '80s music too. If he also hates alternative pop, that's "strike three" for me.
