In Balkan states, ex-Yu, gypsies are not that associated with crime, drugs and similar shit, they're know as musicians, singers, lots of weddings and other occasions have gypsy orchestras and gypsies are really good singers from the early ages, not only gypsy music, but any kind of songs.

Majority of them are poor, indeed, lots of them live in slums, but unlike in Ro, Md, ex-USSR they don't have those rich gypsy barons and thugs living in four floor grotesque houses with lions on sides of gates.

ofcourse.(: where I grew up, there were a lot of taverns (čarda) that performed Gypsy music (pannonian, hungarian style).
many were destroyed during the war, and only a few were rebuilt. i hope that this tradition will be revived.

it's strange but when I close my eyes, I can see plains, a bonfire, dusty roads, a purple sunset,a horse in the distance LoL, and feel the humidity in the air. it reminds me a lot of my childhood (:
