Life is most likely a very common occurence in the universe, the main contentation is that they all might be at very different stages of complexification and randomly disposed around us. Anything that is beyond our civilization, even a couple of thousand of years ahead will look like magic or demonic, while most life forms are certainly separated by millions of years of evolution and developpement, maybe even following completely different paths than ours.

The equivalent of dropping a simple device like a small portable speaker back in mesolithic time and up to Victorian time would already freak everybody's out. People back then wouldn't even comprehend the purpose of the device and see it as a divine manifestation of a higher power as it starts to produce music and speech, and that's barely a 200 years technological gap in the latter. Ourselves don't ask birds or orcas to take us to their leaders when we pass through a forrest or we are on a boat. Orcas are very intelligent creatures, more intelligent than pretty much everthing else besides us on the planet altough we typically never got much contact with them. We can stop for a minute to observe them, even find it extraordinary to some extent but then quickly resume our course. This is possibly what most ufo sightings are about, if anything.

We may or may not be that interesting in the whole fauna catalogue of this galaxy alone to get some more special attention or attempt at communication, not because we are wreckless, territorial and warmonging, probably all the intelligent life went through this so they shouldn't be surprised or put off about it (ie Orcas and Dolphins kill "for fun", because they are very intelligent not because they are evil). Yet nuts and bolts visitors or probes are still the most likely explanation than anything involving imaginary good/bad sky fairies.
