Pedantic modern music usually turn into some very specialized niches like avantgard classical which lack certain originality. Stravinsky lacks some stylistic charm for me, I think he did not really exploit his cultural strength as a russian composer, too much american textures(Jazz). Rachmaninov although a defector, his music sounds more russian than him.

No doubt Rachmaninov sounds more "Russian" than Stravinsky. But that isn't the reason I turn to Stravinsky. Stravinsky's way of making rhythm the driving force in his music is why I turn to Stravinsky. Even melodic development is driven by his unique rhythmic invention.


However, take this one movement trio by Rachmaninov. It goes right to that dark "Russian place" and never lets up.
Nothing in Stravinsky offers this level of introspection.

I probably can make me like Stravinsky if I try, his texture is rich, combination of instruments unusual, but as a soviet russian I expect something more from him and he fails so far to show me that part. From Rachmaninov I can hear nostalgia, homesickness, sorryness for his people, pride as a russian, this part reverbrates with me strongly.

I never worry about music that doesn't "speak" to me at the moment. I just try to keep an open mind in case it "speaks" to me later.

I don't know if this is exactly what you mean by your description. But the two most profound Soviet composers go to a dark brooding "Russian" place in my favorite of their symphonies. Here are the first movements.
