No doubt Rachmaninov sounds more "Russian" than Stravinsky. But that isn't the reason I turn to Stravinsky. Stravinsky's way of making rhythm the driving force in his music is why I turn to Stravinsky. Even melodic development is driven by his unique rhythmic invention.
However, take this one movement trio by Rachmaninov. It goes right to that dark "Russian place" and never lets up.
Nothing in Stravinsky offers this level of introspection.
