Interestingly, the HDI gap between Chile and Bolivia is the same as that between the US and Mexico (0.163). The gap between DR and Haiti is absolutely enormous (0.232). Other big gaps between neighbouring countries include Costa Rica versus Nicaragua (0.142), Argentina versus Bolivia (0.150), Argentina versus Paraguay (0.125) and Mexico versus Guatemala (0.131).

You can imagine how it was before Evo.

Are you saying that to praise or condemn him?

If you're rich or middle-class, absolutely. However, if you're poor it is much more debatable - Cuba still ranks slightly higher than Peru because of its better life expectancy and education, despite average salaries being almost 50% lower.

As for the Haiti-DR gap, it is even bigger than the Morocco-Spain gap (0.232 vs 0.222). I think the only bigger gap between neighbouring countries in the world is Yemen versus Saudi Arabia (0.420). (North versus South Korea would be up there too, only that the DPRK is too secretive and mysterious to be ranked).

N.B. I just looked again, and the Yemen-Oman and Syria-Israel gaps are also even bigger than Haiti-DR.
