History Repeats, If You Forget

In the late 1850s, Britain and France - with US support - waged the Second Opium War against China.

After the defeat of the Qing Dynasty, the Europeans looted Beijing’s palaces,
which had more precious articles than the Vatican and Buckingham Palace combined.

Then they burned it down.

Then the British, French, and Americans made Opium legal in China,
and made hundreds of billions of dollars - in today’s money - in profits from drug trafficking and addiction.

The Chinese government and the people have refused to rebuild the Old Summer Palace.

This is to never forget the Century of Humiliation.

Sources claim that Qing Dynasty of China had been the largest GDP since 1820 to 1870. To me, the problem of China had not been too weak, rather too unruly strong, while lacking individual development(individual strength). Like what Emerson said about civilization: "The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of the cities, nor the crops, but the kind of man that the country turns out."

1820: By 1820, the next year for which full data is available, China resumed its lead and by a larger margin. India was second, slightly more than one half that of China. The United Kingdom finally appears, in third-place with a GDP one sixth that of China and only slightly ahead of France (Figure 3). The available data shows China to have retained the top position through 1870.

I appreciate your sound conscience toward the chinese history neverthlessly. I do not want such humiliation to repeat on us, or on anyone else by anyone however unrealistical and hypocritical it sounds, but it is free for any one to cherish such a good idea.

More is yet to come, thanks to the CCP cooking the books for decades. The actual Chinese economy seems to be much smaller than people mistook it to be, and, consequently, China was bluffing and is thus much poorer.

It's time for multinationals to stop penny-pinching and bring our industry back to the West. Or, if need be, they should be nationalised and compelled into doing so. Whether they like it, or not.

Curious that it is precisely the pro-Russians who begin to sell us the benefits of China.

It is normal, since right now the only way out of the mess that Russia got itself into can only be solved by being lackeys of a real world power, which in this case is China.

How unfairly China has been treated!!! And Africa!!! And South America!!! And we didn't realize it until Russia invaded the Ukraine!! Or rather, until it became clear that Russia could not easily invade the Ukraine, because in the first months of the war Russia was still thought to be a world power and that it could achieve its domination without anyone's help.

I admire China in many ways and they have a very rich history but this is a poor attempt at passing China off as a bunch of victims bullied by foreign powers, when in reality they are responsible for more deaths than all the other Empires of Europe from ancient times to the present combined. Interestingly the most developed regions in China are those that have some autonomy or have been in the hands of Westerners or are separated from mainland China (Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan) and despite years of "Western oppression" they have zero interest in joining mainland China.

They didn't even rebuild the dynasty palace to remember the humiliation, it had nothing to do with the fact that Communists love "worshipping" feudal monarchies. Sigh. One only needs to read a little bit on Mao's Cultural Revolution and the great leap forward to learn that they attempted to destroy every old custom, culture and habits from the old monarchy, they even went as far as desecrating their former emperor graves to burn the remains.

I can't feel like a victim of injustice or play the hero, what a disappointment.
