The reason why they are similar is that metal should also be a subgenre of rock. Something like extreme rock

I thought WASP are metal too. Metal is generally harsher sounding or 'heavier' than other kinds of rock, but it's still a type of rock.

Rock's ancestor to some degree is Blues, that said Rock has evolved a lot since its inception and as an umbrella category can include broad variety of bands under the title of Rock music. But its usually guitar based music with some tendency to the pentatonic scale.

Metal is also quite broad as there are different genres of Metal...Thrash,Black,Nu Metal.
Metal uses certain techniques such as power chords and percussive strumming styles,sometimes alternative guitar tunings.
Depends on the style of Metal but a lot of Metal has less melody than Rock and relies more on dramatic
chord progressions instead of melodic ones.

Black Sabbath is considered to have influence on Metal however musically in many respects Sabbath can be considered hard Rock.

Rock tries to create melodies. Metal tries to be noisy just for the sake of it.

Well on the superficial level analysis extreme metal scares people and rock doesn't . Extreme metal does not scare me maybe because I am male and Germanic.

Rock is also more influenced by American black culture(S).
