Would argue that this is perhaps a distinction without a difference. As the term "Scots-Irish" only came into usage during later waves of immigration from Ireland that earlier settlers wanted to distance themselves from, it reflects politics and ideology more than a hard and fast genetic distinction. Despite the semantic distinction, many self-professed "Scots-Irish" did not have Scottish ancestry, but did have Irish ancestry.

It's just typical American ethnic misrepresentation. The vast majority of ancestors of 'Scots-Irish' were Scottish/British origin, that is obvious in their surnames, religious leanings, as well as the migration records. They even spoke separate languages in the 1700s. And to say there is no genetic distinction between Northern British and Irish is not true either, it's relatively small but it's there and even exists in ancestrydna tests.

Aren't Scotsmen ultimately Irishmen with some Pictish, Anglo and Norse admix thrown in?

And the Irish were the Welsh that could swim. They all might be closely related but they are different ethnicities. Scots-Irish are not the same as the Catholic Irish which is why they have that prefix in front. Different groups with different experiences in the US.

Yeah Grace is correct, the Scots-Irish were like the current Northern Ireland population. They have a unique history with more influence from not only Scotland, but also England. They're generally pro-British instead of pro-Irish. And Protestant.

I'm part Scots-Irish. Presbyterians who came to the USA from Northern Ireland and were originally from Scotland.

I only identify as Black American but apparently I have some distant Irish and Choctaw ancestry or something. I'm from a small, rural eastern NC town. In larger cities people sometimes assumed I was from another country or that I was Ethiopian(?) I'm just curious but I think I just look Black. Attachment 122675Attachment 122674

You look black to me but many American blacks have some White European ancestry too.

West Ethiopid + Guneo-Camerunian whould be your classification, Although it's very unlikely that you're actually West Ethiopid, since this type is only common in caucasoid admixed groups of West Africa (Tuareg, Fulani, etc) and you're probably not half Fulani or Tuareg, so what most likely is happening is that you're Sudanid + a "hidden" Caucasoid (probably either Nordid, Mediterranid or both) element + Guineo Camerunian , I see 0% Amerindian in you.
A similar thing happened to me (as you can see in the taxonomy part of my profile), but since I am 50% European the actual European phenotypical influence is more visible.

Ironically while Ulster Scots/Northern Irish are famously pro-British and loyalist, the Scotch-Irish in America were historically the most anti-British and pro-Independence, e.g. Andrew Jackson. Not sure exactly why. Another irony is that Scottish-Americans direct from Scotland tended to be far more loyalist and pro-British than the Scotch-Irish for some reason, another opposite of the modern UK.

But enough off topic. What type of minor NW European ancestry a Black American has is irrelevant in the scheme of things.
