Ive often said the same thing about him.
However despite his Mutt/admixture he ended up looking like an Italian more than anything else. People associate him as an Italian-American New Yorker. Even the 1980's pop group wrote the song about him
"Robert Deniro's waiting talking Italian". I think his look and his obvious Italian surname plus that he has appeared in several mafia theme movies have contributed to the common impression that he is more Italian than he actually is. I mean imagine if he was 1/2 or 3/4 Italian but his name was Patrick Murphy this would make his Italianess less impressionable or believable. If you have some heritage from a certain ethnicity but if you have been given a name that is rare or unusual for that ethnicity and also that you may have been born in a different country than your heritage then that can be enough for people of your own heritage to not see you as familiar. But a person like Roberto Deniro can be seen as more Italian than he genetically is because of cultural factors such as his name and appearance. In reality its quite possible that he cant even speak Italian.
