    Default The last worshipers of Odin and Thor.

    National Museum of Denmark claims there are 500-1000 practicers in the country but couches it by saying "The modern belief in the Norse gods is not a direct continuation of the beliefs of the Vikings. It is more of a revival and reinterpretation of the old religion, as there are so few written sources on the subject. These mostly consist of brief pieces written by Christian monks or short accounts in the sagas."

    Nationalmuseet.dk: The old Nordic religion (asatro) today

    Is this "New Age" or a genuine "Revival"? I don't know. "New Age" is a very loose term but generally involves some sort of aquarian-ish beliefs, hence the name, with the "new" age being the so-called "Age of Aquarius". How much of this is mixed in with what the National Museum is describing, I've no idea.

    There IS an Ásatrú (slightly different spelling) on Wikipedia's List of new religious movements, but is an American-based white supremacist group founded in the 1990s that uses norse symbolism and trappings but is about as "authentic" as an outlaw biker wearing viking headgear. I hope that's not what the National Museum is talking about.

    ASATRU = MARVEL COMICS...

    Are you saying that anyone could believe in the Nordic deities and describe them as they like because there is no historical source that gives any information other than the 2 pages written by Christian monks to ridicule this hypothetical religious cult of Northern Europe?

    It is clear that all cultures had a religion. But if we want to know how a religion is structured we need to have sources. The "historical" source of Northern European religions practically does not exist. Everyone can invent what they like ...... starting with ASATRU

    There is for example the Edda, which is a source of nordic mythology.

    I've hung out a bit with these groups, they're often degenerates from the satanic black metal community who realize how cringe they looked and wanted to become more trad.

    Ok.. then we need to warn the director of the VIKING museum in Copenhagen (the largest and most important in Scandinavia) that it is not true that the historical sources on the mythology and religion of Northern Europe are only 2 or 3 pages written by Christian monks to ridicule the pagan traditions.. (having lengthened and romanticized the 2 pages written by Christian monks... does not serve to make the historical sources relevant)

    Dead Sea Scrolls = more than 3000 thousands pages about the Bible....... vs 2 pages about nordic religion

    Don't forget other historical sources.... Christian or not.. TOT.. 50.000 PAGES...

    Where are you getting "2" pages from? The Edda is rather extensive.

    Rather extensive ? 4 pages and 3 fragments...( tot 2.000 words ) .? Edda prose survives in four known manuscripts and three fragments, written down from about 1300 to about 1600.

    The 13th century Christian documents describing something about Norse religion are only few pages and some fragments.. (I'm not sure but they aren't even on display in the museum).

    Everything else that has been added has been fictionalized and is the result of imagination. The codex regius Edda poetic dates back to the 17th century and nothing is known before.
