The fact that you think austronesian and papuan is interchangable just clues me in how very little you know. Dont come at me without learning about the topic. I suggest reading, instead of making baseless comments

I thought a reasonable number of people can look like that in the coastal regions at least.

As someone who watches a lot of rugby, and also has seen lots of Filipinos work as nurses in particular, I can assure you that Fijians and Samoans are several shades darker than any East Asian (including Filipinos).
I don’t have much of a frame of reference for outside of my area, but I would say there are more lighter skinned people than darker skinned people on the coast here in Syria. We have a lot of genetic variation, but it is also that there are a lot of minority groups on the coast who do not mix. I think many people view Eastern Syrians as the average Syrian, I look quite Syrian (I think at least, I am thinking of posting a picture in the personal forum but I’m a bit shy about that public stuff), but everyone is shocked because they are expecting dark skinned. There is nothing wrong with dark skin, but people try to tell us how we are “supposed to” look is quite aggravating— especially when the second someone sees a Syrian with light hair or colored eyes and they say “Obviously he is half European, obviously…” etc with these dumb arguments.

That's not true though, for instance I'm pretty certain these people are not from Eastern Syria

    Damascus

    Damascus

    Homs

The vast majority look quite middle eastern with minority of those with colored eyes and lighter pigmented hair, even the Syrian Christians are quite middle eastern looking but Alot of them lack the strong semitic look, rather they resemble more Assyrians, Kurds , Northern Iranians etc

My brother I live here (well I am in the United States for work right now, but I grew up in Syria). Most of them, they are light to medium olive skin tone, no? Are we not talking about skin color? And also... neither Damascus or Homs is coastal. It is okay if you do not know, I do not expect foreigners to know much about Syria, but this is the coastal area, I circled it. Latakia and Tartous.

I am not saying that Syrians look like Europeans... we are not Europeans, nor do we wish to be, we are our own group. But the native population of our coastal area— this means, not refugees from other parts of the country, I mean the people who inhabit this region for thousands of years— is not dark skinned.

Yes I know where Homs and Damascus , Latakia and Tartous are haha , I just wanted to point out that Homs nor Damascus are Eastern Syria, where this stereotype comes from. Most Syrians I know are from western Syria and they look regular middle eastern.

And yeah, Dark skin naturally is not even common in other areas in west Asia so I understand. It's more of a beige/ light olive skin tone among the lighter ones, with the darker ones being darker olive . Actual Dark skin is quite uncommon.

Yeah I really don't see a stark difference either, although the latter are more Caucasus / Anatolian shifted whilst the former is more Arabian shifted.

Haha I understand, I thought you were trying to tell me that the people in the videos were dark skinned, I was very skeptical lol. Honestly, it is probably my bias— "if you are East of me, you are Eastern Syria" even if that is kind of a lie. Yes, we are not claiming we are Swedes, but I notice especially in Europe & USA we are stereotyped as much darker than we actually are, same with a lot of the Middle East races. It is frustrating when people sometimes will tell me I "do not pass in" or "look so abnormal for"my own country because they cannot look past this stereotype, I have Levantine face.
