Why Dutch?

Because the question is whether Southern Italians feel closer to Germanic Europeans or to Mediterranean non-Europeans?

Hard to choose from among these two, but I guess it depends on what exactly will one look at. Probably ethnically/politically closer to Dutch (because they're Europeans as well), wheres there are some cultural things that are more common along the Mediterranean.

Italians feel closer to other Europeans. People that have a similar culture to them would most probably be who they feel the most comfortable with. Here in Australia Italians and Irish have always got on well together as they are both Catholic and family orientated and enjoy socialising. I'd say in Europe they most probably feel a connection with neighbouring countries like Greece, Spain and France.

With my own experience, spending two weeks in Puglia, people i have talked with feel closer to the rest of Europe on most point but have an affection for Levant christian since they share faith and some cultural traits.
But mainly they really like greeks and albanese people.
