Yeah, but I disagree on the reason why. It's very strange that in these particular areas where people are predominately Scots-Irish and other areas a mix of Scots-Irish and northern English that they don't believe in 'hyphenated Americans.' This is not happening in other regions, including parts of the South that are predominately English (mostly descendants of English from Virginia, parts of North Carolina, and South Carolina). It indicates a detachment from their ancestral background.
I would bet good money that if you ask the average person in these areas if they have Scots-Irish ancestry they won't know what that is.
It's a stretch to think so many people are making a statement against hyphenated Americans.

You would lose that bet. There are tons of Southerners who are passionate hobbyists when it comes to genealogy and history, so save your cash in case Slow Joe steals the next election. I don't buy your premise. "Gee, y'all, we have Grandpa Perkins, Grandma Murphy, Grandpa Campbell, and Grandma Morgan, so we iz jus' so doggone confused by these names that we jus' call ourselves American." GMAFB

Most people don't care, dude. It doesn't mean there is something wrong with them. I had a girlfriend who taught at an elite private school. Her last name was Irish as Irish can be. She was Protestant. I asked her how is it you're Protestant but have a very stereotypical Irish surname. She didn't know. I asked her about her whole background: she didn't know. She wasn't dumb. It just wasn't important to her (or her family). For many people - if not most - they don't care. They have other interests.
