William T. Sherman was a Union general who became a war criminal during the Civil War. He said that "war is hell", but people have used this as an excuse for making war upon Southern civilians, including women and children. The photo is from the Wiki article about him.
One of my ancestors was a young woman with children who lived in North Carolina with her children. As Sherman's forces advanced through this state in 1865, some of his marauders destroyed my ancestor's house and her crops. Without the charity of neighbors, she and her children would have starved.
