In Croatia Slavonia and NW Croatia have lot of fatties due to rich and heavy food (and cult of eating and drinking) plus lot of fattie prone Alpinid and Neo Danubian types. Coast and dinaric region has much more slender people, both healthy diet + dinaric/Med phenotype.

Climate plays a role too. Dry relatively warm climate is ideal for thin physique.

I live in a place with a dry and warm climate and i have a tendency for "chubby"-ness despite having a perfect diet without any processed food and being outside most of the day out in the sun, but that might not be cuz of my genetics maybe, since i had a pretty bad diet and lifestyle before i made these "radical changes" to my life. Im still kinda losing weight and for sure not getting fatter but its very slow and even if i eat perfect i still maintain most of the time. I think dna/genetics as in metabolism can be damaged/altered due to lifestyle (diet) over generations. Or even in a single one. Or maybe i just have "high BMI" baseline genetics

In Serbia the fattest are Vojvodinians. I live in Srem and i see difference on average between natives and settlers from Bosnia and Croatia who live next to each other. Natives (Sremci) are fatter and shorter on average. Sremci eat a lot of pork meat. Pigs are one of the symbols of Srem https://luftika.rs/vinski-park-sremska-mitrovica/

Many Sremci are fat and like to eat as youtuber Debeli (fat) Sremac. Apart from appearance and lifestyle, his accent and way of speaking are pure sremački (Syrmian).

OP specifically said Estonia to Romania, I would agree with excluding Bulgaria from the group, because in married couples I more often see a fat man with slim woman than the opposite.

I know a guy who had 6 pack right before meeting his wife, now he is like 30 kg up and she is still slim after childbirth. I suspect she overfeeds him and doesn't allow him to play sports so that he will be fat and less attractive to other women. What a devilish tactic.

    For sure.
Many rural people from Dalmatia were bony and slim ('suvi', 'vižljasti'). As my great-grandmother for example, left on the photo with a headscarf (https://i.ibb.co/Jv61Pfg/IMG-20231230-005614.jpg). Man on the photo is her husband my great-grandfather, and in the wedding dress is their daughter (sister of my grandma).
In not so distant past among peasants from Dalmatia (probably Herzegovina as well) obesity was very rare. Malnutrition was more common.

Bosnians have nothing to eat, and I'm half joking here.

Many families only have a small lunch during the day, and many people still live in poverty. They consume litres of coffee and smoke tobacco (mostly home grown) to satiate their appetite. Having both seen and heard firsthand.
