Let me answer this question by asking another question, when Americans say they want to go to Europe, where do they mean? Britain, France, Germany, Italy or Spain? Or Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland? I think I rest my case.
However I do think it's a bit stupid to divide Europe so much these days as West and East as they relate the divide between communism/socialism and liberalism and western democracy. Nowadays the true East would just be Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Then again what societies have contributed most towards European culture? the British, Dutch, French, Germans, Italians and Spanish without a doubt. Italians brought the Renaissance, Germans left a huge cultural mark all over what is known as Central Europe, without the Spanish we wouldn't have potatoes, chocolate etc and without the Dutch capitalism would've never flourished the way it did. Look up mercantilism for those who don't know.
