Default Do you believe that non engineer politicians should be allowed to make law related to tech?

Honestly. Vast majority of politicians in USA are lawyer. Not many engineer and all of them are old so probably 0 experience with technology .

Why should these people get to make law related to tech if they don't understand it?

    Isn't it bad for economy?

I think that people irrespective of country deserve competent politicians.

This is a common practice now, and not just in the US. There are defective managers everywhere, their education are a law and an MBA degrees, from job responsibilities - managing financial flows and reducing costs.
People directly connected with production are losers in their opinion.
Of course, they shouldn't be allowed, imho.

I don't believe that politicians should be involved in business at all, nor trading in stock when they influence the legislation that makes or breaks publically traded companies.

They couldn't be more obvious if they tried. Who spends $10 million on a campaign to get elected to a $200K a year job.

Politicians, administrators, lawmakers, and managers should stay away from technocratic decision making. They have their roles though.

Politicans don't need to be experts at anything, all of them have entire teams of aids of any needed expert professions behind them.
Law makers regularly consult teams of professionals in given fileds when making legislature.

    You are pretty naive.

    As someone who is engineer-adjacent—

I don't care whether a politician is an engineer or as worked as one, but I care whether they are educated enough to listen to what people who work with technology and science say. The inability of politicians to do this is one of the most aggravating things out there.

TikTok is not a platform I like or think is anything other than a net negative for society, but watching the testimony of their CEO in front of the US government made me cringe so much at the sheer incompetence/idiocy displayed.

HUDSON (CONGRESSMAN): Mr. Chew, does TikTok access the home WiFi network?
    > CHEW (TIKTOK CEO): Only if the... user turns on the WiFi, I'm sorry I may not understand your question.
HUDSON: So if I have Tiktok app on my phone, and my phone is on my home WiFi network, does TikTok access that network?
[CHEW LOOKS AROUND FOR A SECOND IN CONFUSION]
    > CHEW: You will have to, access the network, to get connections to the Internet. If that's the question?
HUDSON: Is it possible then that it could access other devices on that home WiFi network?
    > CHEW: Congressman, we do not do anything that is beyond any industry norms. Uh, I believe the answer to your question is no, it could be technical, let me get back to you.
HUDSON: Yeah, I'd appreciate if you could answer that.

I recommend watching the video, you will understand what I am saying here.

This one isn't exactly related to technology, but is part of this whole thing and I wanted to give it an honorable mention.

COTTON (SENATOR): So, you said today, as you often say, that you live in Singapore. Of what nation are you a citizen?
    > CHEW (TIKTOK CEO): Singapore.
COTTON: Are you a citizen of any other nation?
    > CHEW: No, Senator.
COTTON: Have you ever applied for Chinese citizenship?
    > CHEW: Senator, I served my nation in Singapore. No, I did not.
COTTON: Do you have a Singaporean passport?
    > CHEW: Yes, and I served my military for two and a half years.
COTTON: Do you have- Do you have any other passports, from any other nations?
    > CHEW: No, Senator.
COTTON: Your wife is an American citizen, your children are American citizens.
    > CHEW: That's correct.
COTTON: Have you ever applied for American citizenship?
    > CHEW: Not- no, not yet.
    COTTON: Okay.
    [PAUSE]
COTTON: Have you ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party?
    > CHEW (ALMOST SHOCKED): Senator, I'm Singaporean. No.
COTTON: Have you ever been associated or affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party?
    > CHEW: No, Senator, again, I am Singaporean.

In an ideal world, no. Taiwan half a century ago appointed engineers and scientists into their government and guess where is Taiwan now.

No to technocracy. Tech professionals are fah-idiots without any menagerial or visionary skills that are needed. It's not coincidence law is career best suited for high politcs. Experts are there to consult, not to lead.

Haha lulz. Any scientist or engineer is more suitable for managerial not to mention visionary jobs than lawyers, business executives and similar crap. This is the 21th century afterall. When I was studying on university my professors always made laugh of lawyers, economists etc.
