    Default TEFAF Maastricht

Does anyone know the TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) Maastricht?

    https://www.tefaf.com/

I've been there a few times and did now get an invitation with two free tickets by an art dealer that exhibits there.

It's doubtlessly the highest level fine art fair in the world and it exists for nine days a year. It's a kind of a temporary Louvre or Eremitage with the difference that the exhibited objects change and you have no hurdle between you and the objects. As you are considered a potential buyer you can even eventually touch and examine the art objects. Of course, the dealers will in a brief conversation with you find out if you are a blubbermouth or a serious and knowledgeable collector. As there is one special interest of mine (Hamburgian old silver works) I can dive indefinitely deep into that and I do know more than the dealers that have to be into a much bigger number of topics, ofc. I enjoy the whole fair as a fascinating and inspiring museum.

Although being essentially an unsocial individual the unique social TEFAF conditions can not be ignored by me. During the fair there are regularly landing abt. 300 private jets at the Aachen-Maastricht airport from all around the world with notable collectors. I recall standing in a short queue and having a German couple behind be, both aged something like 60 years. I heard him telling her (translated): "Nah, they want 1.2 million [euro] for them, that's too much." It was obvious to me what they spoke of as I knew the objects from an earlier auction and they were openly standing in front of us: two Meißen porcellain kind of 80 cm high white (ankwardly formed) lions that had belonged to the August the great, elector of Saxony (and king of Poland). I'm a normal individual with a normal income and my only peculiarity is that I'm interested and somewhat educated. Now, kind of casually moving among those folks made me almost feel "high". And having goose pimples as for the accessability of the objects. A very pleasant and impressive environment!

Also, as a commoner you can simply buy a ticket and visit the fair. For those who are interested I can just warmly recommend to once do so.

If Laly should not yet have been there in spite of Maastricht being nearby she deserves to become whipped.

It seems as a really high-class event. Enjoy!

I pray we can expect a detailed reportage — accompanied with an abundance of photographic material — afterwards, in Laly’s style.

Amazing my dear rothaer! I wish you a wonderful time at the TEFAF this year and as member MCMXCV mentioned, we would be very happy if you could provide us a nice detailed reportage, including beautiful pictures! I am not suprised you like to attend such events, I know you are such a man of taste, such a refined and sophisticated man!

What a coincidence that you evoke this top level art fair! I have already attended it and I also received an invitation, but I was able to give it to someone else who absolutely wanted to go, because I'm not sure yet, but there are chances I will be in Russia at the time of the TEFAF art fair in Maastricht. Today, I saw one of my cousins and she told me she will go there with her husband. And just a few days ago, with this same cousin, I attended an art fair which is famous in Belgium and which put (Belgian) surrealism in the spotlight this year. We had, indeed, received invitations to attend it:

And so, dear rothaer, you have a collection of Hamburgian old silver works?

That's hard to avoid. The background is that I found out to have an ancestor 10 generations ago that was a gold smith there and works by him are out on the art market. So it all started. And when I let a child of mine drink out of a beaker that is made by an ancestor 11 generations ago it gives me satisfaction.

I cannot even imagine the satisfaction to be in possession of something one’s ancestor made ten (!) generations ago. Especially if it’s a valuable artwork. You’re very lucky in this regard, that there even are such items in existence.

Yes and I was astounded myself. There are some more simple (and nevertheless flawless) works like this

but also some more sophisticated ones like this:

The thing is that we do speak of items that are abt. 350 years old. Not overwhelming maybe but noteworthy imo.

EDIT: I think that the many people that have taken care of those items for 350 years are impressive and a role model.
