The more I've thought about this, the more I think this is Europe's problem. I see no reason why America should have to restrain Putin for the safety of Europe. I can see why it's threatening to Western Europe, but you all have the capability to keep Russia in check. You're wealthy, populous. Build your own militaries to take care of the problem. If, in the unlikely scenario that you don't succeed and Russia takes over all of Europe and comes a-knocking at our door, then it will be in our best interests to go to war. There is no moral obligation on our part to be the world's savior, especially when most of the world claims they don't like our presence anyway.
