Smaland noticed how everyone was laughing at him for his belief that Putin was planning to one day take Alaska. Why would Putin apologize for being in the KGB? First of all, that would be a sign of weakness. Secondly, people who spend their lives in an organization, such as the KGB, CIA, Gestapo, or whatever don't look back and say, "Yeah, I spent decades doing horrible shit." What they do is rationalize their behavior with the organization in which they spent their adult life. They justify their behavior to themselves.

The fall of the Soviet Union in the psyche of many Russians is associated with economic collapse and a big drop in the standard of living (it was already tough and so just imagine). They suffered under Communism and they suffered even more after the collapse. A sharp rise in crime, drug addiction, etc. The economic collapse of the Soviet Union was eventually going to happen because Communism sucks. However, many Russians remember life right before the collapse, which was bearable, to a sudden drop in quality of life.

What's also of importance is that with the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia became irrelevant for over a decade expect if you wanted to buy weapons in the black market or wanted strippers. It was embarrassing to the Russian people.

What allowed the Soviets to have satellites in Eastern Europe was Poland, etc. were devastated after WW2 AND these nations had a large communist element that was armed and had fought the Germans. They had goodwill towards the Soviets. Goodwill toward Russia doesn't exist today. To believe Russia will want to take over Eastern Europe is just ignorance. Even if they wanted to do so they don't have the manpower or support of the locals that would be necessary to hold. It would be a constant guerilla fight if they had the numbers.

What I'm trying to prove, dumb fuck, is that not only aren't the Russians moving into nations that are devastated from a major war and so they're easy pickings for a foreign army to take control but there isn't an element in these Eastern European societies that would provide the support needed to hold these countries. They would have to completely rely on Russia's own manpower, which wouldn't have been sufficient back then as it wouldn't be sufficient today.

But I agree it won't come to this. They're having enough of a hard time with Ukraine as it is.

The above is a good example when you're right for the wrong reasons. They don't want Eastern Europe. It would be a headache to administer if they could for reasons already pointed out.
