3
could be a fun game. You can chose more than 1
1. Zagreb (North Croatia)
Spoiler!
Population: 1 million 200k with metro
Geography: flat, landlocked, in SW part of Pannonian plain, surrounded by hills and mountain on the north side
Climate: continental, 4 seasons, dry humid summers, cold winters with snow, fogs are common
Architecture: central European, typical Austro-Hungarian style, soc-realistic and typical modern post ex Yu in newer city parts
Politics: increasingly liberal and green, but city is known as rather conservative historically. Some parts are very traditional.
People: long term native Zagrebians are known as being cold and uptight, but with very nice manners, kind of like Vienesse. Lot of new Zagrebians who came from other regions brought warmth, chaos and party spirit to the capital. Generally reserved and passive-agressive and can be seen as "boring". Working class natives are based, tough and fun to be around, they like to drink.
Culture and activities: excellent and diverse, very lively and rich cultural life whole week, most of things in Croatia happen there
Cost of living: high, but not the highest in Croatia
2. Split (South Croatia)
Spoiler!
Population: 350k with metro
Geography: on the Adriatic sea in central Dalmatia, surrounded by mountains but city itself is relatively flat
Climate: typical Mediterranean, hot and dry summers, mild winters, sunniest big city in Croatia
Architecture: old centre is very Mediterranean, outer parts and suburbs are in soc-realistic style and typical modern post ex Yu
Politics: either very leftist or very right wing. Currently ruled by progressive liberals but overall known for conservative and pretty right wing population. Both sides are more agressive and less moderate than average
People: known as very difficult to deal with but also very special. Generally fiery, extraverted, and very agressive. Arrogance and bad manners are common but they are known for humor and being "very beautiful people" in general. Not open to outsiders. However you know where you stand with them, they say everything in your face. Once (or if) they accept you, they can be coolest people ever. Lot of eccentric and chill people there.
Culture and activities: very good offer for a city it's size, and known as cultural hub of Croatia. However less busy outside of season
Cost of living: very high, most expensive big city in Croatia
3. Rijeka (West Croatia)
Spoiler!
Population: 200k with metro
Geography: on the northern Adriatic sea, sourrounded by high mountains, very tight and lacing space, almost toal lack of flat zones
Climate: humid suptropical, 4 seasons and mild but windy winters, rainiest big city in Croatia
Architecture: central European on the sea which makes it very unique. Some of highest concentration of commieblocks in entire Croatia due to city industrial character. Old remanants in the centre and around city are Mediterranean. Most diverse architecture to see in Croatia
Politics: very leftist and even communist, most liberal big city in Croatia. Known as "Red fortress"
People: closest thing to western Europeans you can get in Croatia. Liberal, very tolerant, individualist and they mind their own business. Open to outsiders and polite, with urban manners. On the other hand probably coldest Croatians. They are friendly and not snobbish like Zagrebians, but it is hard to get to know them. Chill and not bothered by conventions and rigid social rules.
Culture and activities: alternative and modern urban culture is prominent, but for lovers of more traditional things there is lack of options
Cost of living: below average, not cheap but cheapest city to live on the coast
4. Osijek (East Croatia)
Spoiler!
Population: 150k with metro
Geography: in Panonnian plain, flat as a pancake, with lots of open space
Climate: clear continental, 4 seasons, drier than Zagreb, winters can be freezing, in summer humid and problems with large mosquitoes
Architecture: very central European. Less commiebloacks than other 3 cities. Traditional architecture of region is kept in villages around.
Politics: generally conservative, traditional and Right Wing, but not in agressive way.
People: old natives from city are known as being very classy, polite and pleasant. Since it is in Slavonia, it is interesting mix of Pannonian, central European and Balkan mentality coming from people who moved in from southeast. Generally they are known as very hospitable and they love to party and eat.
Culture and activities: kind of sleepy and with less options than other 3 cities, but there is classical and traditional cultural offer there
Cost of living: cheapest big city in Croatia
