You make the British sound annoying. The last thing I want is someone talking to me on public transport, and being jolly is over the top. Just smile and say hello and go about your business like a normal person.

Not on the East Coast (New England and Mid-Atlantic states). The south is very 'smiley-smiley.' I don't think that holds anywhere but the south.

Even in NYC the service culture is friendlier than in London, as are the general public to an extent.

Friendly isn't the same as 'smiley-smiley.' You can be friendly without being extreme.

Maybe they're just being normal human beings and people in London are just miserable fucks?

Really? I heard about shops and bars being friendlier in NY but isn't the large proportion of people there basically foreign like in London?

Well yes, but in both cities people do to varying degrees adopt the big-city culture regardless.

I would say that in London the friendliest chattiest people are the taxi drivers, you get in one and they won't stop talking lol
