Haha well I think that the Spanish are quite friendly generally but having spent time there it never seemed as jolly as parts of the UK, moreso in parts of Britain people actually are sociable and chatty on commuter trains even when fully sober. I never saw strangers talking to each other that much on public transport in France and Spain.

You make the British sound annoying. The last thing I want is someone talking to me on public transport, and being jolly is over the top. Just smile and say hello and go about your business like a normal person.

Not on the East Coast (New England and Mid-Atlantic states). The south is very 'smiley-smiley.' I don't think that holds anywhere but the south.

Friendly isn't the same as 'smiley-smiley.' You can be friendly without being extreme.

Well yes, but in both cities people do to varying degrees adopt the big-city culture regardless.

I would say that in London the friendliest chattiest people are the taxi drivers, you get in one and they won't stop talking lol
