Yes that's right. The subnational estimates haven't been updated yet.

Ankara and Konya are typically considered part of the Central Anatolia region. However, in this map, they are depicted as separate from the rest of Central Anatolia, forming the region with the highest HDI in the country.

More generally, it seems that the biggest gap is no longer between Western and Eastern Europe, but between EU and non-EU members. For example, the gap between Poland and Belarus (0.080) is bigger than the gap between Germany and Poland (0.069). Similarly, the gap between Croatia and its neighbours Serbia (0.073) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (0.099) is bigger than the gap between Slovenia and Croatia (0.038), and Slovenia itself is identical to Austria. In addition, the gap between Norway and Russia (0.145) is practically identical to that between the US and Mexico (0.146). (OK, Norway is not an EU member as such, but it is an EEA member).

Turkey is listed above some EU members such as Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.

Yes, and is joint with Slovakia. But the point is that the criteria to join the EU isn't just economic, but also revolves around human rights and political liberty, which of course have all deteriorated under Erdogan.

Doesn't he have a real support base though, especially among the rural and religious?
