Did the US try to impose racial segregation during the years they occupied DR?

Yep, but this translated in the practice on their doing repression on the West Indian seasonal workers on the sugar industry here, whose racial militancy was rather high (Marcus Garvey even attempted to open a chapter of UNIA here, but the marines repression made that an abortive exercise).

How is the US occupation nowadays viewed by most Dominicans?

Exact split regarding the first one, unanimous condemnation regarding the second one.

Yet despite that, haven't you said that more than a few Dominicans would even choose to supplant Spanish with English, given the choice?

Yeah, but in spite that, the zeitgeist here is that Cubans are the heroes of the region due to resisting the evil Yankee and stuff. Dont ask me to attempt explaining this contradiction, cuz even I struggle at times to understand the ways of the normie here.

The more I have learnt about Cuba, the more put off by the regime I have become. I used to be a qualified supporter of it, but really it is just an impoverished totalitarian dictatorship, and blaming everything on the embargo won't wash either.

Did the story of Reinaldo Arenas (as detailed in the movie Before Night Falls) had something to do with that?

Yeah, I think the term "Tropical Stalinism" would be an apt description for it.

Well I remember watching it when it came out (no pun intended!) over twenty years ago, and that alongside reading the tragic story of Gloria Estefan's childhood started to make me have doubts. But the final straw was probably visiting Miami itself in 2019, where of course I met lots of Cuban exiles, and it made me think "if it were such a great regime and country, then why have such huge numbers of people fled it?"

Yeah, I think the term "Tropical Stalinism" would be an apt description for it.
More like tropical Titoism, but yeah. (As much as I am not prepared to defend the Cuban regime anymore, it is still way too hyperbolic to compare it to Stalin).
