That was the time of Satanic Panic, and there was a cottage industry built around it to part gullible people from their money. There were a lot of ruined albums from being played backwards too ("here's to my sweet Satan; he will give you 666") when backwards masking was fun for the whole family, and Judas Priest was in court on charges of influencing people to commit suicide via "Suicide Solution". Then, you had the McMartin Preschool mess, which was either the bust of some of the sickest people to ever walk the face of the Earth or a breathtaking miscarriage of justice based on the most outlandish stories instigated by specialists and therapists with more coaching than Bear Bryant. It's also just after the time that Mike Warnke created the blueprint, the template, for the dozens of "I survived an evil cult" stories from alleged survivors of generational devil worshippers, Illuminati, reptilians, etc..

Yeah, I remember the Satanic panic stuff. I remember there was a daycare on Long Island that got caught up in that. It was bullshit but the family who ran it paid a heavy price.

The satanic panic was almost always nonsense but there was some true stories that got downplayed or covered up. The one in mind is not in the 80s but late 70s with the Son of Sam murders. There is more to it than what most people know. David Berkowitz (or however you spell his name) was involved in a Satanic cult and there is reason to believe he didn't commit all the murders. He was the fall guy for a group of Satanists because he was the one who got caught. The police were content to the close the case with Berkowitz as the killer and move on.

Sam was actually the father of two of the cult members (both died; suicide and car crash not long after Berkowitz was caught).

Maury Terry wrote a book about it. If I remember correctly (it's been a long time), newspapers were publishing his insights (correct use of the word) as the police were trying to solve the case.

I remember some weird stuff from my childhood in the 1970's. I won't post about it here in the 1980's thread. I had a boyfriend in the 80's whose older brother was a Satanist. The older brother was nice to me but when I became pregnant in 1988, my then-ex-boyfriend threatened my life and he also said his brother would try to kill me because he was out to kill the whole family. And I had downstairs neighbors who were Satanists. The man that lived above me in the 80's committed suicide.

Oh, yeah. He said that the devil dog story was complete nonsense, but Sam Carr's sons were devil dogs, themselves. Elizabeth stole my thunder, but I read Maury Terry's book a couple times years ago, and he went down the rabbit hole *and* through the looking glass when he tied the Arliss Perry murder, professional hit men, Charles Manson, the Process Church, etc. into one big bow of homicidal satanism. Some people "debunked" Maury Terry's claim that there's a huge group dedicated to mayhem, but other people speculated that the alleged Smiley Face murders (in which male college athlete/scholars' dead bodies are found by bodies of water with smiley faces nearby) are linked to the very same cult.
