I don't agree. You should be able to read and interpret an essay or a novel in your native language, whether you're an engineer or not. The various fields of study complement each other, they don't exclude each other. In the same way, someone who has studied at a Faculty of Humanities should have at least a basic knowledge of mathematics too. The world we live in requires us to have more and more skills in a multitude of areas. We no longer live in the era of our parents where you graduate from a course and work in the same job and in the same area all your life until you retire. I'm currently working in accounting for example, which isn't necessarily my field of study.

The habit of reading is not only beneficial as a way of improving oral and written expression. It fosters the development of abstract reasoning, which is essential for studying mathematics and physics, the two pillars of exact sciences and engineering. I do not see how they do not compliment each other.

That's not the point, just as it's not the Humanists who decide the engineering or exact sciences modules that are lectured. You have to complain to your university lecturers, not to me. Apparently they think it's important, just as 90% of the theory you learned on your course is also important but likely has no applicability in your daily life. You have a very unidimensional way of looking at things, the equivalent would be for me to be here complaining about being taught something that is deviant from the subject of Humanities because I don't need to acquire that type of knowledge... until the day I actually need it and it comes in handy. Knowledge is power and you can never have too much of it.

I am assuming that Serbo-Croatian language is mandatory from primary school to high school. In literally every country in the world, the native language and mathematics are the most important subjects in school. The fact that you do not like it does not make it useless. Literature even plays an important role in one’s ethnos. There would be no Croatia if there were no Croatian literature. Every nation worth mentioning has its own literary canons. You can’t build a national consciousness around electrical engineering but you can around Croatian literature. That’s why every nation makes their students read those “boring” and “useless” novels and poetry from centuries ago that some native wrote. They form and shape one’s identity.

It's partly true, but both in old times, literature was targeting some 1-2% of educated society, now it targets only interested ones, while majority skips it, even if "on paper" they read it for studying purposes etc.

Majority of Croatians, Russians, Englishmen and others existed for centuries without ever reading something or even without knowing how to read.

You've mentioned Dostoevsky before, but this guy was extremely far from understanding what are Russians, he existed in noble circles, the only place where he collided with common people was a penal servitude period, where he first met "common people" which were mostly extreme characters. The only more or less realistic characters of Dostoevsky are described in "Demons", because he described people from his own circles of his revolutionary "Decembrist" period.

He's not alone in this, Tolstoy and lots of others had a lot of fantasies about own country and people whom they normally avoided in regular life. Russian White Emigree and Anticommunist Ivan Solonevich noted that they made a good job for leading Germans in disguise before the WWII, because German ideologists tried to learn Russian mentality through Russian literature and it was one of the reasons they failed in conquering Russia. Russian literature shows totally distorted picture of Russian people from fantasies of the bored noblemen.

Literature may be useful, it may be fun, but it's another extremity to turn it into something sacred, first extremity is a to have an attitude of the reptile, like everything not practically needed should be ignored.

I've noticed that the secular worship of literature and generally culture make an average modern person refer to the quotes from fiction literature almost like to Biblical quotes and moral compass, even if it's just "highly intelligent" Humanistic nonsense or some obvious things and having attitude to writers, poets and singers like to some prophets or saints, while majority of people of art often turn out to be regular deviants, not to condemn for this for sure, just it's silly to worship them.
