I think it depends on what books you read.

I think Mortimer isn't dumb, he is chemically "lobotomized" by risperidone or whatever medications he uses to battle his schizophrenia.

My grandfather used to develop schizophrenia along with dementia in his mid 90s, the moment he had to take risperidone I also noticed a significant decline of his sharpness and intelligence.

Plus reading alone doesn't make you a intelligent person, if you read fiction, it doesn't mean anything.
I still advocate for reading anything including fiction as it improves your attention span combating the social media swiping that declines your attention span.

Morti isn't dumb, he had excellent grades in Austrian gymnasium and went to study law
Intellectually challenged people can't do that.

I never saw Mortimer as not intelligent and I was even very shocked when he shared his results from a test he took. A very curious individual actually with knowledge of a wide array of things. IQ tests are not that accurate in determining intelligence if you ask me. A lot of things that they ignore.

Same here. We have Russian literature lessons and Foreign literature which seem to include same authors as in your system.

Really average minded people confuse weird people with stupid people or uneducated people.

All that literature crap needs to be taken out of the 21th century schooling system. It's the 21th century after all. I have never read a single novel from high school subject called 'Croatian'. Like I am crazy to read hundreds of pages of Ana Karenina or whatever. That Croatian teacher never liked me. In the end I got a Masters degree in electrical engineering. Muh novels and 'books'. Insteading of reading hundreds and hundreds of pages of useless literature students should be taught information technology and something like that.

It's not useless for one's lexicon, understanding the World of the past and current days not as something abstract, unluckily there are too much people who may be very good specialists ib some sphere but you have nothing to talk about with them, topics are limited to their job, something about family, memories from the army, maybe something about cars. While you have some specialists who even didn't have to read any literature as a must, but did it out of curiosity, for own interest, and they have really wide outlook.
