Indeed. I'm really glad I started reading the classics on my late 30's /early 40's. If I had as a kid I'd probably not finished them or wouldn't have taken advantage of them as I have now.

You are very good reading people.

P.S: And yeah, I don't get what the fuss about Stephen King is, the dude can spend a whole chapter describing some thing like a car or a room that will never show up again or has any relevance to the story. He should have been a screenwriter instead of novelist.

I have read many books. I read "Catcher in the Rye" in the 5th grade. I also read "War and Peace" and many books by William Faulkner and also many Christian authors. You don't know me very well.

I used to read alot when younger, but now not anymore, because of other media, like internet. I was member of a town library and read alot, and in school. But now im occuppied with internet, and the ocassional movie. Does that make me somehow "less"? You seem to imply that in your thread, "they never a read a book in their life" what does that mean? We are "less" the ones you listed and you are better?

As a result, a big number of high schoolers really dislike reading if they haven't developed that habit at home through upbringing.
One example of this is Candide. I had to read it in tenth grade. I thought it was funny and brilliant. It wasn't until years later, I understood the ending.

I missed the philosophical part went past me,
The whole point of the book is the spiritual part

Literature even plays an important role in one’s ethnos. There would be no Croatia if there were no Croatian literature. Every nation worth mentioning has its own literary canons. You can’t build a national consciousness around electrical engineering but you can around Croatian literature. That’s why every nation makes their students read those “boring” and “useless” novels and poetry from centuries ago that some native wrote. They form and shape one’s identity.
Like I wrote already East Asians don't give their students long ass novels to read. They as you know focus on more important things and have still retained their culture. And also as you know already 80% of novels we had to read were foreign novels.

Grammar should stay and novels in elementary school should be mandatory, but in technical high schools cut out completely.

Gothic horror and ghost stories are great too. Some morbid humour is fine as well.

This led me to Joseph Conrad and HG Wells, which led me into dystopian political fiction and early science fiction.
Tragedies and love stories are fine, but there has to be some mystery, suspense and danger of death to be interesting.

So this formation gave me a tomboy personality that does not tolerate Jane Austen or similar stories very well!

Too boring, too soft, too many characters, the family tree is too complicated, the environment is not interesting,
and there is no danger or excitement or serious conflict, the story feels like a telenovela or soap opera.
Also, I do not care much for family dramas or stories about courtship for the above reasons.
There is meaning of course, but nothing profound or interesting for me.

I wrote about some of the authors I liked when I was growing up:

Austen was a quick guess, as i perceived you differently, i should have checked your avatar pic before lol

Sherlock-type stories are my favorite, maybe that's why i like the stories of Austen in general even though i don't like reading them, her stories are usually complicated and distractive enough to satisfy that urge to crack the case and solve the mysteries haha
