I think Kraut is sort of a slur for a German-American in the US. I never use slurs.

I'd get that it's not appreciative of the fact that I'm a German, but I'd not feel insulted. I'm not wrongly depicted by that and nobody is obligated to appreciate someone being a German or being kind to him. To face dislike is not nice but also not insulting.

I compared the aspect that excrement does depict something that is commonly not appreciated and nevertheless is no kind of slur.

I do indeed not recall a slur for a Gypsy in English. But you know what? There is also none in German!

Referring to the sheer fact of a Gypsy was likely enough. Then all was clear. There was no need to express one's opinion on Gypsies as that opinion was common sense anyhow.
