Those really didn't manifest until he turned 40. It is almost like he woke up and discovered his biological clock was ticking away. He seems to want to have children, but he really isn't interested in raising children. That is his wife's duty.

It seems obvious to me. The fact that he has other psychological problems serves as an excuse for the way he behaves or expresses himself. I can only imagine that it can not be easy to live a lie for so many years, whether it's because of your religious convictions, family pressure or simply fear of what others might think. That has got to take a toll on one's physical and mental health. I could be wrong but in all these years I've never seen Meade say anything that would indicate or make me think that he feels any kind of attraction to the opposite sex. Even when he fantasizes about his hypothetical future ideal woman, it always seemed forced and awkward, with a number of weird requirements and rules that no man normally has for a woman.
