Not one, not two but five elephants are pregnant here at the Sedgwick County Zoo. And these will be the first African elephants born in the entire state of Kansas. I'm super excited that they're going to grow the herd here and we're going to have little elephants to watch grow as we come throughout the years. Samue Talia Zanni Azi and Zubiri. These are all the soon to be proud mothers of five new baby elephants at the Sedgwick Zoo. We're going to have a really busy and an amazing 2025. The zoo has been working to grow its elephant herds since 2016, but it was a rocky road just like humans can have problems with fertility. We weren't getting any pregnancies. So the zoo is over the moon for these elephants new arrivals. Getting that first uh confirmation that we were going to have a pregnancy here at the zoo was, was probably one of the biggest highlights of my career. The first calf is expected to be born in the early spring of 2025 and the rest will follow shortly after the gestation for elephants is 18 to 22 months it's both exciting and honestly, in my role, a little intimidating growing the herd by 60% is no easy feat. Zoo staff has been working nonstop to make sure both the mamas and babies are healthy and it's thinking about future plans, we will need to expand our indoor facilities a little bit to accommodate all of these animals. This is not only an exciting time but also a long awaited one. These will be the first African elephants born in Kansas and they'll be right here making history at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Northwest Wichita, Jocelyn Shefford, Ecker Cake News on your side.

In its announcement, the zoo noted that now, with this new elephant pregnancy, all of their female elephants, except for one named Stephanie, who is no longer of reproductive age, are currently pregnant.
