This thread is intended as light heated fun. Just chose the design you find most appealing and perhaps explain why.



The flags are numbered from left to right from left to right, each column separately (as you can see there are two columns of proposed flags, the one on the left with 8 and the one on the right with 6). So the left column has flags 1 and 2 on top, 3 and 4 below them, and so on. Is this confusing or does everyone understand?

I like our present flag very much. Our flag is the most Estonian thing ever .

But if I'd had to choose something else, I'd choose between the two upper flags from the right column.

The right column flag six.

The white cross to symbolise purity, the similar colours to the Finnish flag, but not too close a resemblance, just an homage, and it doesn't look too similar to any of the other Nordic flags, and so stands out proudly.

Those with the white background look too Finnish.

I arrived at my choice by a process of elimination; it looks the most individual, uncompromising, but Nordic.

I think that the colors would still symbolize the same things as they did before, even if the flag design would be changed.

Symbology of the Estonian flag:

There are a number of interpretations attributed to the colours of the flag. A historical interpretation of the colours has blue representing ancient freedom, black symbolizing lost independence and white, the promise of a brighter future. Another interpretation made popular by the poetry of Martin Lipp is as follows[2]:

blue: vaulted blue sky above the native land;
black: attachment to the soil of the homeland as well as the fate of Estonians – for centuries black with worries;
white: hard work, purity, commitment, and (most likely) white sails of ships

But I really like our flag as it is. The blue-black-white tricolor is also the flag under which we fought for our independence, and one that we used before we even had a country. I like that the Danes have a legend of getting their cross flag while warring in Estonia and I wouldn't mind the use of an Estonian cross flag as a symbol of our connection with the Nordic region (and perhaps some other Baltic Finnic tribes that might use this type of flag), but I wouldn't go about changing our national flag...

As far as I know, the Estonians are one of the few Finnic people who don't have a Nordic cross flag.

I don't understand why most Finnic people chose the Nordic cross design while making a national flag. Maybe it's because of the connection to Finland.

Izhorians, Livonians, Estonians, Votes and Tornedalians don't use the cross. Finns, Karelians (did?), Vepsians do.

Finland's flag has a precedent in the (Russian) blue and white flag of the merchant navy. The first Finnish flag actually looked like this:



But it was later changed for various reasons. As for the the Karelians' cross flag, it was designed by Akseli Gallén-Kallela. I'm unsure who designed the Vepsian flag but it has only been in use since 1992.
