Can people of different age groups be friends?

I only associate with people that are old enough to not be my kids and young enough not be my parents.

so basically people your own age. To me to be old enough to be someone's parents you have to be at least 20 years older. I know people can get pregnant in their teens, but it's not commonplace. A 25 year age gap is definitely a parental one.

I know of something similar IRL. An age gap friendship between two men is probably not that unusual. There was a band I used to open for (a Rock noise duo) . The younger man was in his early 20s (barely 21 at the time I met him), and the other man in the duo was in his 60s. They toured around playing different events together. I never thought anything odd of it. They seemed to be good friends. In this day, although, the boy was over 21, one could read into that it was like a kind of relationship other than just friendship, and an older man going for a younger man. They were not gay, however. They were just very close friends. The older man died recently.

In a social setting, I mean outside of the work place?

I work at fast food and most people there are under 30, unless they are a manager . It feels weird but as coworkers I'm around teenagers and early 20s and there doesn't seem to be any real thing at odds with this, despite the enormous age gap. What strikes reality is I would never hang out with these people outside of work because I would feel completely odd. Even if I were their ages, I would still probably feel strange.

I was wondering tho because the nice thing about working is people seem to forget about how old you are and treat you more like a person. There is an older lady at work much older than me even, and the teenagers treat her more like a peer rather than a mother figure. But for a 45 year old man to hang out with 17 year old girl is probably not going to look very good.
