From a film the other day:

'We need to bring Russia into our way of thinking'
Indeed we do. They are not apart from Europe but a part of it.

If you can provide me with some Russian sailor lexicon in Latin script I could help you translating it.
Nearly every term in the Russian fleet is of the Dutch origin

    трап/ladder
    палуба/deck
    шкот/sheet
    фок-мачта/foremast
    твиндек/tweendeck
    трюм/hold

    etc

Not really, 'Our way of thinking' can simply mean a general West-European mindset.
Russia would make a good "East Britain" - the pariah on the periphery. - The awkward country which gets in the way of Franco-German Europe domination.

Forcing nations into models that do NOT suit them historically, culturally and politically is a recipe for disaster, and the very OPPOSITE of all that a sound nationalist foreign policy should stand for.

Among other things, the Bolshevik Revolution took place due to the former elite's ever-increasing Germanification. Peter the Great started this metamorphosis, or superficial distortion, rather, and the coming to power of the Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp-Whatever dynasty (of which Nikolai II was a member) kept it on the same track, despite the failure of this Westernising policy to really find roots in the Russian Nation. When the chance came, the Folk shrugged off this alien straitjacket. Unfortunately, lack of political experience (thanks to the previous extreme centralisation and lack of national cohesion between the classes) saw a worse alternative seize power in the vacuum.

And hang on - you want Russia to be 'Western' in order to foil the French and the Germans? Who is more 'Western European' than the French and the Germans!??! They ARE Western Europe, ffs.

Yeah, small, poor Russia (up to the California (Fort-Ross) its good that Russia managed to sell Alyaska, otherwise we would choke completely, we've been choked though and without Alyaska.

Fuck sake Osweo, you're always up Russia's arse.

It's not about forcing politics onto them, more finding common ground and agreeing in areas - the Russians under the surface have a lot of policies and views which match our own.
Both don't like the direction in which the EU is heading, as partners we could change that.
We can bring them around to our way of thinking, taking them away from their stand-offish ways by becoming something of an ally with them in regards to European policy.

"East Britain" was a term to suggest a similar country in it's stance to Europe, not a Brittonification of Russia.

And hang on - you want Russia to be 'Western' in order to foil the French and the Germans? Who is more 'Western European' than the French and the Germans!??! They ARE Western Europe, ffs.
More "Western" in that they should abandon all the pipe dreams that Central Asia is a really credible region in the world.
They are tying themselves to the only countries that will still listen to them, Central Asia and Ukraine and Belarus.
In all honesty these nations are a joke and the joke will be on Russia should it abandon co-operation with real economies and powers and join the club with these dead herrings.
