It is not in Poland, but I was always struck by the area where the Poles lived in the East and North-East Before WW2, because many towns were isolated from others, this reminds me of a situation with Tatars and the Uralic ethnic group in general in Russia. Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks in Bosnia or Armenians before WW1 and Germans in Eastern Europe
Having been largely divided, they preserved their entity, language, religion and culture, largely only marrying people of their ethnic group.
