Belarusian identity isn't so new, it exists since PLC times afaik but it was never very clear-cut. You had Ruthenian orthodox peasants in Grand duchy of Lithuania, later Poland, Russia etc.

Their language is organic, not artificial. Ofc it's not widely spoken when it wasn't really promoted in educational system.

Modern Md identity is so, and the only reason Md won't join Ro are regional elites who want to stay in power. They will become nobodies in new Romanian reality, while their grandpas were in charge since post WWII Moldova, just changing the banners and ideology. In modern reality referring to ancient Md as a reason of difference is more a demagogy, irl nobody gives a damn, I mean populace, but rulers of Md do and they use this pathetic demagogy.

My point is, maybe for country like Belarus it's better (?) to become Russian than democratic and western filled with third worlders.

But it's a pity there are only 2 choices like that.

You quickly realise that full sovereignty is untenable these days,
most countries are forced to align with 1 of the 2 sides eventually.

So it becomes a question of which side you prefer,
which side protects the people's sovereignty better, which side interferes less in daily life.

Interestingly Belarus had as few covid restrictions as Sweden,

so I cannot say that the form of government or geopolitical alignment will predict how oppressive the government will be to the average person. (as long as the government is not totalitarian)

there were affirmative action programs too, and still few people bothered to speak the language!

Moldova is mostly Romanian I think, with other minorities. There is no Moldovan ethnic group.
There is no ethnic difference between Wallachians and Moldovans and Romanian Transylvanians,
they are the same people.

Maybe Romania can get Moldova back when Russia gets Transnistria!
