A Russian priest once told my husband, many years before he met me, "don't marry a Russian girl - I have to hear their confessions, I know what I'm talking about". As a joke, of course, and the deeper cultural issues the joke referenced probably apply just as much to my country as they do to Russia - but there was a reference to deeper cultural issues, that anyone who isn't stupidly in denial is well-aware of.

An American man who is obsessed with Eastern Europe once got mad at me for talking about the high abortion rates. As if getting mad about his delusion of anywhere-East-of-Germany being conservative utopia was gonna change the fact that it just isn't.

Nowhere is perfect. And I say this as someone who is a huge simp for Eastern/Central Europe and ex-soviet countries in most other contexts. But perfect conservatives we are not.

Yeah I'm one of those suckers married to a Russian. Nah I like Russians but they are not very different than anyone else. It's not an easy place to live even for Russians, Americans would go insane dealing with stuff like red tape. As much as I like em and the culture I'll stay here.

Do you mind sharing your source regarding “a lot of abortions”? Russia has an abortion rate similar to Denmark and Iceland unless you’re looking at data from the 90s.

I am not sure where you are getting your “trad wife” and “post-soviet” stereotypes from but anyone who is remotely familiar with modern North Slavic women would tell you that they are educated, emancipated, and independent. That’s one of the reasons for plummeting birth rates in Russia, similar to other European countries.

I think she's referring to the stereotype you hear on the internet (of course). This stereotype applies to Asian and Latina women, also.

With advances in modern technology and economic opportunities women weren't going to stay home in the kitchen. I know some people keep saying how the CIA supported the feminist movement in the US during the 60s and that the goal was to get both husband and wives out of the house and working to create more tax revenue and allow public schools a greater influence on molding children, but this also happened in other countries both Western and not. What influence does American feminism have on Japan? None. Yet, we see the same results: women working outside the home. As a nation advances technologically there are opportunities created that didn't exist prior and traditional values become an obstacle to those opportunities.
