That may be true with other tribes like the Kimaks (Kipchaks) but nothing is for certain about the Proto-Bulgar homeland, some have proposed that they originally came from the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan, but there is no evidence for that yet. They were first observed living around the Sea of Azov shortly after the Huns vanished. One of the earliest Bulgar rulers was Irnik, which sounds a lot like the last Hunnic ruler, Ernakh. So in order to figure out who the Bulgars were we must look into the Huns, and we know from Roman sources that they were a mixed people consisting of Slavic, Gothic, Turkic, Sarmatian and other groups.
