Do you support the independence of Hawaii from the US?

I used to live in Hawaii (Oahu). I went back a while ago and although it has a very strongly enforced set of environmental policies/laws, it still seems like a state overrun with asians and pop culture.

Do they (Hawaiians and other) even want independence? I don't think they would want to be cut off from federal funding which is a quite bit of money.

Well, most natives essentially feel the same way: that they were cheated by the US who they see as having overthrown their monarchy and stolen their land. I'm sure there are more radical elements that want not only independence, but a complete removal of foreign inhabitants as well. Many locals celebrate "Kill Haole Day" every year, though attacks are rare nowadays. But I think the vast majority do want an independent state of some kind. It's rare to find pure Hawaiians nowadays, they're mostly mixed with asians, so I think therein lies one of the major problems. There do seem to be some haoles (hippies prolly) and other local foreigners that do support Hawaiian independence, however I don't think they would be so quick to give up their comfortable lifestyle if the situation changes.

Two of my cousins are part native and they seem to be for at least some degree of sovereignty, whether as a protectorate or reservation etc.

Personally, I would be in favor of turning it into a sovereign protectorate of the US. Then we could have a strategic position for our military in the Pacific while allowing their culture to flourish and become a more authentic vacation destination, instead of the cheap, tourist friendly, asian flavored resort it is now.

am I supposed to care? I feel like I should say No, I like the fact that I don't need a passport to go to that shit-hole so I can get a tan or whatever it is people do there

Yes. It's basically a foreign country, with settlers from mainland USA making up less than a quarter of the population (the white population is 22.7% and the black population 1.6% for a total of 24.3%). The rest is Asian, native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and mixed race. It's geographically far away from the rest of the US. It's only been a state since 1959.
