Laura Dekker arrived today in Sint Maarten completing round-the-world sail voyage
Dutch teen sailor Laura Dekker just arrived 3 hours ago in Sint Maarten, thus finishing her 1-year-long trip around the globe (scroll down for photos).
Dekker who is 16-year and 4-month old became the youngest person to circumnavigate the Earth alone, but her record will not be registered as a Guiness World Record as the Book gave up this category in 2009, therefore “youngest” or “oldest” records are not applicable anymore.
Over the last miles of her world tour, Laura was accompanied by family members including her parents, sister and grandparents who followed closely in their boat while approaching Simpson Bay harbor.
The young Dutch girl, whose sailing project was suspended for a period by the justice department in the Netherlands, will turn 17 on 20 September. She had to accomplish her journey before 16 September, to overcome the unofficial record set previously by Australian Jessica Watson, who in May 2010 finished a similar sailing tour just 3 days before turning 17
Laura Dekker returned to the island of St. Martin after completing the solo sailing trip around the world in 516 days and covering a total distance of over 47,000 km.
As a comparison here, the circumference of the Earth is 24,902 miles or 40,075.017 km (equatorial) and over the poles (meridional) is 40,007.86 km or 24,860 statute miles.
