    Default That's us, the Portuguese.

    Hello every one.

I'm from Portugal the land that saw all my ancestors be born. I'm from Tomar, an historical town in central Portugal and I lived in a nearby village where Neanderthals also lived some 50000 years ago.
I'm not a nationalist because I hate politicians and political borders, I'm a Patriot because I love my land and my incredible culture. As most Portuguese, I have a profound love about my roots and my homeland which is larger than nowadays Portugal. I’m here to discuss our common ancestry in this rectangle southwest of Europe, in this garden by the Atlantic. My main interest is protoportugal, that time window so important for us to understand who we are and in which historians know nothing they are talking about. I understand that history doesn’t supply them the tools they need, those are in the hands of archeologists, geneticists and other sciences that only brought together may be useful. So, lets forget the usual historian speculation and look around us and try to figure out who we are.

    That's us, brillant!

    Welcome aboard!

One thing that I'm wondering about though:

I'm not a nationalist because I hate politicians and political borders, I'm a Patriot because I love my land and my incredible culture.
You seem to have some kind of specific definition for both bolded terms, could you elaborate a bit on those?

I've often come across the very American argument, that "I'm a patriot, not a nationalist. Nationalists hate others, patriots love their country," which is of course a very subjective way to define nationalism. It also carries the implied idea that "patriotism" is love of state and institutions, i.e. a civic nationalism where membership is based on contracts, while nationalism as an ideology is some kind of primordialist ethnic/racial supremacism.

Hi Ripper, as far as I understand, in Portuguese you should not use both words as synonyms although many people does it. That may vary from language to language. A nationalist is someone who loves his nation which should be understood as country or a place politically bordered. A patriot loves his "pátria" and that isn't so easily defined in English but we could say motherland and motherland has no political borders, only cultural (ethnographic or linguistic) and genetic (in more recent approach). For example I'm quite sure my motherland is the land occupied by Portugal, Galicia, the old kingdom of Leon (the northern regions of Spain like Asturias and Cantabria in general). Of course the further you move away the further the cultural dilution increase.
