Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) composed this music at the Palace of Versailles, for King Lous XIV (the Sun King). Lully, originally from Tuscany, officially received French Citizenship (as a Subject of the King), in 1661. When 14 years old, Lully was discovered and sponsored by Roger de Lorraine (the uncle of Anne Marie La Grande Mademoiselle), and he settled down with them in Paris.
The Mademoiselle's Musicians (Nicolas Métru, François Roberday, and Nicolas Gigault) influenced and tutored Lully. In 1653, Lully was officially honored as the Royal Composer for Instrumental Music. In 1661, Lully was employed as the Superintendent of Royal Music, and the Music Master of the Sun King's Royal Family. In 1672, Lully became the Director of the Académie Royale de Musique (in Paris).
In the last years of Lully's life, the King expressed some displeasure with Lully, but the composer remained loyal to the King throughout it. Lully died from a gangrene infection, in 1687.
