The Bahraini trace their origins to Arabia, and it's believed to have been the center of the ancient Dilumn civilization that is mentioned in the epic Gilgamesh. The Bahraini people originally followed a mystic religion with the God Awal as the head, often represented by a goat's head. In the 7th century A.D Bahrain would convert to Islam and leave the Persian empire. The Bahrainis are mostly composed of Arabian tribes such as the Bani Utabah who are the rulers of the island, Uynuid, Usfuraids, Jarwanids and the Bani Khalid Muntafaq which also stretches into Iraq. Today they are divided into Sunni and Shia.
