Georgia abolishes visas for Russians
TBILISI, March 1 -- Georgia has dropped its visa requirements for Russian citizens entering the country, according to a presidential decree appearing Thursday on the administration's website.
The decree says Russian citizens wanting to enter Georgia will no longer need a visa and can stay in the country for up to 90 days.
The publishing date of the decree was Feb. 29, one day after Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili proposed the move during his State-of-the-Nation address to parliament.
In October 2010, Georgia allowed visa-free travel for residents of Russia's North Caucasus regions but other Russian citizens still required visas, which were available at the point of entry.
President Saakashvili issued a presidential decree back in June 2006 requiring Russian citizens to acquire visas before travelling to Georgia.
