Default Are Americans culturally or mentally European?

Do you think Americans are just Europeans living across the pond? Or do you think they are completely different to normal Europeans (mentally and culturally)?

Vaguely European, in the sense that Americans are a Western people and came here (for the most part) directly from Europe. Their thought is rooted in European concepts, although they often give a different twist on them.

But at the end of the day, Americans are basically offshoot Europeans who went their own way and developed their own interpretation of Western culture.

We are not talking about their genetics. of course they are pure white (about 40% of them)

I am talking about culture, etc etc.

Do you think America is just an extension to Europe?

Not anymore, given that like half of our population will be Mexican in the next thirty years.

I prefer a description similar to what you have outlined, our regional "American" cultures are incarnations of cultures that came with one's respective ancestors, the variations relative to a groups experiences in the New World.

First, the problem with this question is that you make Europe seem like a homogenous place, which is not true at all. There is no such thing as a common European culture or mentality.

Secondly, to answer your question, the USA, along with Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, are an extension of Britain (and perhaps Ireland too). However, the colonies, especially the USA, have grown apart from Britain over a period of time, resulting in different cultures and societies.

Slightly different to very different depending on where in Europe you're talking about. The U.S. has more in common with Britain than with Spain or France for example.

The concept of Europe is vague and ill-defined, Americans culturally have a lot in common with Britain and other Anglo countries. Racially most whites are descended from Northern European stock. Culturally America is the core of Western Civilization at the moment.
